Our Seven Springs range of wines has grown with the release of our 2018 Seven Springs Chenin Blanc (the yellow label pictured below).
Raj Parr recalled coming across a bottle of Bethel Heights Vineyard Chenin Blanc from the mid 1980s and was eager to see if, 3-and-a-half decades later, our similarly situated property on the eastern slopes of the Eola-Amity Hills would be a suitable home for Chenin Blanc.
In the winter of 2016, we top-grafted just 1 acre of old-vines Wadenswil clone Pinot Noir to Chenin Blanc. Raj sourced cuttings from his friend Tegan Passalacqua (@ownrooted) and the Kirschenmann Vineyard in Lodi, CA.
2018 marks our second vintage. A historically dry vintage, the Chenin ripened fully and has developed into just the kind of textural, food-friendly white wine we thought this site was capable of producing.
In terms of style, this Chenin Blanc was inspired by the bone dry and fiercely reductive wines of Richard Leroy from Anjou in France’s Loire Valley. He too grows Chenin Blanc in volcanic soils and he strives to craft wines that are flinty, very taut, high in acidity and freshness, with the ability to age for a very long time.
